Life Insurance and Alcoholism

If you have a history of alcohol abuse but now have it under control, you can still qualify for traditional life insurance in Canada. Having said that, the best possible scenario would be a rating meaning your monthly life insurance  premiums will be more expensive as you are considered a higher risk applicant.

How much the rating will be for will be dependent on how the insurance companies underwrite your alcoholism. The factors they look at most often are; how much alcohol was or is consumed, how long between drinks, current age, if you are a member of any alcohol support groups such as AA and whether you have had any relapses.

You can qualify for a non-medical life insurance policy as well since many insurance companies like Resurgence California, don’t ask alcohol related questions in their brief medical questionnaire. Getting approved with non medical insurance coverage is your best bet at least until you apply and qualify for traditional life insurance. Also, it is good to keep in mind that if you apply for traditional life insurance and get declined it could greatly affect your chances of getting any other type of insurance.

Remember you are not alone in your fight against alcoholism, 4% of the Canadian population over the age of 15 is dependent on alcohol.
