According to Crohn’s and Colitis foundation of Canada, Crohn’s disease is a chronic (lifelong) illness. People who have CD will experience periods of acute flare-ups, when their symptoms are active and other times when their symptoms go into remission. The average risk of a flare-up in any one year is approximately 30%.
If the Crohn’s is very severe, or is accompanied with other health issues, for example depression you can be approved with a high rating or a decline.
The best course of action is to provide your insurance broker with as much information as possible on the medical condition, this can include medications, dates of episodes or flare up’s, other medical issues, visits to hospital. The information should be sent without your name,as a general inquiry to all insurance companies to see who would be willing to give you an approval. This allows the applicant to get a good idea if there is a chance to get approved even before they complete the application and medicals. It also allows the client to decide if they want to pursue a non medical insurance which has much easier underwriting process. In many cases the recommendation is to do a non medical insurance beforehand as a safety net. Remember if you are declined in the last 2 years the non medical insurance would implement a 2 year wating period. This is why its suggested in severe cases to put the non medical insurance in place before applying for regular life insurance. Non medical insurance is more expensive but remember it’s better then having no coverage at all.
