Smoking and Life Insurance

Can I get approved if I quit smoking ? Can I get approved if I smoke marijuana or weed ? I get this question a lot about life insurance underwriting and how it relates to you quitting smoking. Life insurance smokers test, questions about chewing tobacco life insurance and life insurance testing for chewing tobacco. These same things apply to marijuana and the effects of weed on life insurance premiums. Without listing all of the positive reasons that go along with making the decision to quit smoking and following through. The real motivator is two fold. Visiting with thousands of families and clients I always find myself explaining the importance of quitting smoking not only from a health point of view but a money in your pocket standpoint. Not only do the costs of cigarettes take a good amount of money away from your monthly income. But your life insurance protection can be thirty to forty per cent more expensive sometimes even higher. A great question to ask is why that might be? The life insurance companies specialize in calculating risk and the likelihood of death. It’s clearly evident that smoker’s experience a higher mortality rate and as result premiums are significantly higher then non-smokers. Another key piece of information is that for insurance companies it does not matter if you are a casual smoker who has one or two cigarettes every couple days, or if you’re a hard core hacker who inhales a pack or more daily. The men upstairs view this as one and the same. Even more worrisome is how the percentages steadily rise as you get older. Experiencing the death of my father in law who at one point was a chain smoker, was a life lesson I will never forget. Life is precious and so are your children, its time you took control of this habit. We all have the power to break this habit it’s just a matter of deciding. Decide and develop a plan to quit. There are many ways to do this you just have to try. Find out what other does have done and do the same. Attack this task like you would prepare for anything that was important to you. Research it, talk to others, and then take the necessary action.

It’s not too late, along with all the amazing health benefits to accompany the decision to quit smoking. If you quit for one year, you can apply or do a medical and get the non-smoker rate. Which will save you big time dollars and let’s you spend those otherwise wasted premiums on things that matter like your family and future. If you have a policy as a smoker you can always ask to have it changed to a non-smoker assuming you have quit for that one year. Another huge benefit is the grin you will have when you see how much you have actually saved, and the pride you obtain knowing you have conquered a huge obstacle. I truly believe that this is a great motivator and usually a kick start to a transition to a smoke free and healthier lifestyle.
